Spatial heterogeneity and socio-economic correlates of unmet need for spacing contraception in India: Evidences from National Family Health Survey, 2015-16

AbstractBackground The unmet need for spacing (UNS) is one of the key concerns family planning programme in India despite country achieving replacement level fertility. Objectives current study aims to identify spatial heterogeneity and factors associated with Spacing India. Data methods present used data from National Family Health Survey, 2015–16. outcome variable was contraception delaying subsequent births two or more years (UNS), explanatory variables were socio-cultural demographic factors. included 56,742 currently married women (aged 15–49 years) who had demand during survey. Descriptive statistics, bivariate chi-square significance test, natural break technique, multivariate logistic regression accomplish objectives. Results Almost 51% not using delay their next birth It found high across all socio-economic groups except higher-level education richest groups. Spatial analysis confirms 248 districts remarkably UNS (68% above). Findings suggest women's education, autonomy, household wealth status important reducing UNS. likelihood noticeably higher among parity three (AOR: 1.42 [1.3–1.55]) compared counterparts. Similarly, it 44% 1.44[1.38–1.51]) likely OBCs than General caste. 1.24 times rural 1.24[1.19–1.30]) urban. Among geographical regions, comparatively South 6.19 [5.76–6.65]) other regions. Conclusion Dealing necessitates increasing make client choice-based services accessible, promoting birth-spacing focused policies.
